Real Stories from the Marshfield area

Early one morning I woke up to the unthinkable-the strong smell of smoke coming under my bedroom door.  I didn't know how bad the fire was until I touched the door and severely burnt my hand.

Everything I owned was gone, and the only place I could think to go was American Red Cross, a United Way funded program.  Initially I needed a little extra care because of my hands.  With no family close by the Red Cross connected me with Mary's Place, the transitional housing shelter in town, and also a United Way program.

Mary's Place offered me what no hotel could-friendly people who helped me take care of my burns and do simple things I used to take for granted, like open the refrigerator door.  I stayed for a week until I was strong enough to care for myself again.

These two programs helped me keep my head in this horrible time and figure out what I needed to do to move on.

Thanks to United Way contributions this network of programs keeps our community strong.
