2011 Campaign Update

Marshfield Area United Way is currently at ninety-one percent of this year's campaign goal of $910,000. Funds total $829,699 as of December 19, 2011. Since a number of campaigns have not been turned in yet, it is still too early to project the outcome of the campaign. The Marshfield Clinic Match Challenge gave this year's campaign the boost United Way was hoping for, but unstable economic times are a major factor that are influencing this year's campaign.

The community's response to the Clinic's Match Challenge far surpassed any projection United Way had anticipated. While figures continue to be calculated, so far, United Way has received $35,381 from 552 increased givers and $74,129 from 709 new givers.

"We both gained and lost many donors this year. Without the generosity of the Marshfield Clinic and the community's tremendous response to the Match Challenge, United Way would be drastically short of the $910,000 goal based on the number of people unable to give this year," said Paula Jero, Executive Director of Marshfield Area United Way.

The fact remains that economic hardships remain prevalent in and around the Marshfield area and have a direct impact on the number of people able to give year-to-year. The current economic climate has also increased our community's service needs, especially for those that help provide basic necessities.

As United Way makes its final push toward the $910,000 goal, it is not too late to give. Any donation, big or small, can make a significant difference in improving the lives of the people of our community. Donations can be mailed to PO Box 771, Marshfield, WI, 54449. You can also drop off donations at the local United Way office at 156 S Central Ave or make a donation with a debit or credit card by calling 715-384-9992.

Community Kids' Kind Contribution

Marshfield Area United Way Executive Director, Paula Jero, visited third grade classrooms at Washington, Grant, Lincoln, and Nasonville Elementary Schools to explain what United Way is and how United Way helps people in our community. The presentation emphasized that United Way is able to help the community because many caring people give a little and not because one person gives a lot.

Each third grade classroom then held a "penny drive" collecting change for United Way. All together, the third grade classrooms at the four schools visited donated $831.37 to the 2011 United Way campaign. The amount donated more than doubled any previous amount raised in years prior for the Community Kids Campaign.

Real Stories from the Marshfield Area

Twleve-year old Ellie was referred to
Children's Service Society counseling due to having difficulties with finding a best friend and fitting in with peers.  She had been oppositional at times with her mother and father.  She was sometimes sad and angry and lashed out at her parents with sarcasm.

Ellie had a history of being diagnosed with OCD, and had a tendency to over-focus on her diet, as she had a history of binging and starving.  She had difficulty putting full effort into school work.  She was getting an incomplete on assignments approximately once per week at intake.

A treatment plan was developed in which Ellie agreed to work on talking to her mom and dad about her feelings before getting sassy and also making school a priority.

After attending several counseling sessions at Children's Service Society, Ellie has made significant progress in her goals. She and her parents reported rapid improvement in her communication of feelings and also in her effort in school. Ellie no longer had incomplete assignments.  She reported feeling more hopeful about her school situation and her ability to make friends. She was showing no further symptoms of OCD.  Ellie completed her goals and was discharged as a result.
