MARSHFIELD—When Vicky Peterson’s husband called her Wednesday evening she had a hard time believing his message: she had won the cash prize of $42,678 in the United Way Dare to Dream raffle.

Ticket sales closed at 5 p.m. and John Baur, United Way Board President, drew Vicky’s winning ticket, number 3602. “Rich from the Eagles gave me a call, when they couldn’t reach Vicky at home or at work,” said Randy Peterson, Vicky’s husband.

“I got home and he said, let’s go out to dinner to celebrate.  I thought he was messing with me, and it was all a joke,” she said.

Even as the couple walked into the Eagles and Vicky received congratulations, she said she still was in disbelief.

Paula Jero, United Way’s Executive Director compared the winning ticket with Peterson’s stub.  As they compared the numbers, Peterson’s knees sagged under her.

“It wasn’t until I checked my ticket with Paula that I really believed it.  I guess it’s still sinking in,” she said.

It was Randy’s idea to buy a ticket.  “I thought it was a good cause and a great opportunity,” he said.  Peterson purchased two tickets, she put her husband’s name on one and hers on the other.

Vicky only bought her ticket last week at Marshfield Savings Bank, where she works, and almost missed that chance.  “I had totally forgotten, but a receptionist reminded me, since time was running out,” she said.

“We’ve always given to United Way because we believe in the work they do,” she said..  The Petersons don’t know what they will do with the prize.  “We’ll probably donate part and then I don’t know, maybe something fun and exciting,” Vicky said.

The raffle launched in February as a new fundraising opportunity for United Way. “We’d like to thank Wisconsin Homes for partnering in this unique event.  We’re so happy that the first raffle winner was a local resident,” said Baur.

Since there was less than 4,300 tickets were sold the drawing went to the cash prize rather than the house.

“We’re happy with the results of the raffle.  It was a great prize for the winner and United Way will use proceeds in our community to help many residents achieve what they need to maintain a good life,” said Jero.

“I’ve never been a winner, never won raffles or lottery.  We don’t go to the casino,” Vicky said.

It seems as though Vicky’s luck has turned.
